Teaching Prize for Catriona Drew

The Director's Teaching Prize recognizes excellence in teaching and the promotion of learning within the School. Its purpose is to stimulate teaching and teaching-related scholarly and/or creative activities, particularly at undergraduate level. The prize is open to any member of SOAS staff involved in supporting the student learning experience and both individuals and teaching teams may be nominated. This year's panel (comprising representative from the SU, the Pro-Director, the Associate Deans Learning and Teaching, the Head of Learning and Teaching Strategy and an external representative) was very impressed by the applications and their outstanding commitment to student learning.

The 2008 prize has been awarded to the teaching team of Dr Catriona Drew & Dr Aeyel Gross (Law Dept, Faculty of Law and Social Sciences). The external panel member, Professor Nirmala Rao, Pro-Warden (Academic) at Goldsmith's College who will be joining the School in August as Vice Principal (Learning and Teaching) commented:

"This prize-winning team - Drs Drew and Gross - impressed the panel with their highly innovative approach to teaching, in which they display imagination and creativity.  The climax of the course, a simulated peace conference, provides students with a unique opportunity to role play a negotiation and learn the skills of conflict resolution.  Intellectually demanding and highly commended by the students, the teachers achieved a refreshing critical engagement from a diverse student body"
