Middle East WMD Free Zone Project
The pr esence of various forms of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) in the Middle East is one of the most difficult security issues bedevilling the region. For many years, the international community has set the objective of establishing a Zone free of such weapons in the Middle East. However, political circumstances have allowed the development of neither a negotiating process nor a sustained informal process that can engage both governments and international civil society.
This project in applied international relations research will develop public education and international dialogue on the issue of the proposed Middle East Weapons of Mass Destruction Free Zone. Long term projects and objectives include:
- A project on the security problems stemming from the proliferation of civilian nuclear energy in the region
- A project on the economic and development incentives for creating an over-arching security architecture for the Middle East
- Workshops and conferences both in London and the Middle East region promoting the issue
